The daily financial struggle is something a lot of us have to contend with. However – every man, woman and pony is entitled to enjoy the campervan life at least once in their life. So if you’re strapped for cash, but still want a kickass holiday, here’s a guide to the cheapest campervan hire prices in Australia over a typical calendar year.

If you really want the best deal on campervan hire, do a bit of research when booking. Take note of these tips:

Avoid Christmas Peak Season:
Between 24th December to 7th January is by the far the most expensive time of the year – all across Australia. It’s summer, it’s Christmas Holidays, it means you will pay a HEAP more for your rental over this period.

Avoid Easter & Public Holidays:
Easter is the next most expensive time of year to hire a campervan. In Australia, Easter is a long, long weekend – both Friday and Monday are public holidays, so most rental places will either be closed or will charge like a wounded bull!

School Holidays & Uni Breaks:
Take note of School Holiday periods and University semester breaks, prices often increase during these times with demand.

Festivals:
There are some major music festivals in Australia that see demand for campervan hire soar. ‘Splendour in the Grass’ in Byron Bay is one particular festival where 30,000 music-goers migrate in July every year from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

4WD Hire Seasons:
4WD Hire in the top-end (Darwin, Cairns, Broome & Alice Springs) can get pretty expensive over the dry season (May-October). It’s worth considering renting a 4WD on the shoulder of the dry season to save quite significantly on hire costs. From November to April you can forget about heading too far into the outback as temperatures can get as high as 50 degrees Celsius. While the top end usually floods from excessive rain between Dec and March – it’s not worth the risk, so best to avoid 4WD hires in Darwin over this time.

So you’re thinking of driving a Campervan around Australia…

From the extreme tropics of North Queensland to the cold, desolate landscapes of Tasmania, Australia is one big mother of a country. If you like surfing – then you’ll be in heaven. If you’re a weirdo like me and you dig the desert, then you’ll freak on the Northern Territory. And guess what?! We even have snow in NSW and Victoria – HA! Take that Europe! We have it all man….

It’s a big adventure. Along the Pacific Hwy from Brisbane to Sydney you will see some of the best coastline in the world. Along the Nullarbor Plains from Adelaide and into Western Australia, towards Perth, you will fall in love with the sparsity and – given the right drugs – will experience that mind-bending feeling that you are totally insignificant in comparison to the size and complexity of the universe. Just like the universe, Australia’s plains are endless and infinite…you could live 1000 lifetimes but you will never see it all. A trip, a crazy, crazy trip that you will never forget. And the ancientness of the land will inspire you to forget about the 9-5 grind that awaits you later in life and just explore…and love and lose your mind! But seriously – there’s nothin’ sexier than a dude/dudette who has just braved the untamed wilds and lived to smoke another spliff…

“What is the feeling when you’re driving away from people, and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? It’s the too huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.” – JACK KEROUAC

Hire a Campervan and explore Uluru, The Olgas and Kings Canyon!

What’s drier than an old lady’s armpit? Australia’s Red Centre. Sometimes it gets hot, sometimes it gets cold. There’s a massive rock in the middle of it and more snakes waiting to fang you than outside a Used Car Lot. Screw any other desert, this is the one that you will freak on the MOST! Get your ass into a 4WD Rental or Campervan and discover the Mereenie Loop. It’s around 1100km full circle back to Alice Springs in which you will see amazing gorges, massive ancient rocks and serene desert landscapes. If you’re an artist or writer – or if you’re just pretending to be to get chicks – you’ll love the Mereenie Loop!

And the people get freaky out that way…super freaky. Friendly as shit though! Desert madness they call it…and the only way to make friends with them is to be seen in a Campervan or 4WD Rental…I’m not kidding. Crazy bastards out there eat live scorpions.

Hire a Campervan and explore The Great Ocean Road!

Just out of Melbourne are the amazing 12 Apostles and the splendour of the Great Ocean Road. I know what you’re saying… ‘More fu#!ing rocks? Are you kidding me, friend…I didn’t fly my European ass all the way to Australia to see rocks?!” But calm down…the Great Ocean Road is awesome. Otherwise we’d call it the ‘Just-Kind-of-OK Ocean Road’.

The Great Ocean Road is about 200km long, taking in some amazing coastline along Victoria’s South-West Coast. It starts in Torquay, about an hour and a half from Melbourne. On a sunny day it’s damn nice and even better if there’s some waves around. The water’s cold though, so if you plan on swimming or surfing, make sure you wear a wetsuit so your balls don’t crawl up and rest on your lungs…I’m sure you’ve researched this region yourself though. So I’m not gonna’ patronise you any further by sprouting facts about the region. However it is worth telling you that just around the corner from the G.O.R on the Mornington Peninsula, our 17th Prime Minister, Harold Holt disappeared mysteriously on the 17th December 1967. According to popular belief, Holt dropped LSD and ran naked into the ocean screaming ‘Free me Krishna, Free me’, before flying across the Southern Ocean and retiring amongst a small penguin colony in the Antarctic.

Australia’s Beautiful East Coast…

Sand, sunburn and sexy times! Possibly the most traversed highway in the country, the Pacific Hwy from Brisbane to Sydney is a holiday mecca for Aussies and Internationals alike. You’ll see hundreds of campervans and motorhomes along this stretch of paradise – from hippies in Wicked vans to families in Britz motorhomes. Beautiful, crystal clear waters look west towards lush tropical rainforests – the East Coast is paradise. It can get as busy or as quiet as you like! Quiet beach towns like Broomes Head, Red Rock and Seal Rocks are pretty much ghost-towns outside of school holidays. And on the menu – a meat pie from a small country bakery and a chocolate milk – life is simple… You can also explore the metropolitan beaches of Sydney’s north shore, or the famous sun-soaked sands of the Gold Coast. And if the weather is good, you’ll probably never take a better roadtrip than on the East Coast…

Great stops along the way:

Rainbow Beach:
Most people come here to get the ferry across to Fraser Island and take a 4WD tour, but have a look around. The beaches are beautiful and safe for swimming. And just a little out of town you’ll discover the massive sandblow that overlooks the whole of the East Coast. A perfect place for a sunset beer. If you’ve hired a campervan or motorhome from Brisbane, be sure to checkout the Glass House Mountains on the Sunshine Coast on your way back to Brisbane.

Gold Coast:
A literal playground for the sinful traveller and keen surfer, the Gold Coast is like Australia’s version of Las Vegas. With endless nightclubs, bars and blonde bombshells, the ‘Goldy’ is nice for a visit, but the soul surfer in you will soon want to escape after a few crowded sessions at Kirra, Burleigh or D’bah.

Byron Bay to Coffs Harbour – The Northern Rivers:
This is where you can really cut loose and explore. Isolated beaches, wild kangaroos and lush tropical rainforests – this corner of NSW is the heart and soul of Australian surf cutlure. It’s in this region that you’ll still see a heap of old VW combi campervans getting around, chugging along the Great Dividing Range towards Lismore & Nimbin.

Waterfall Way:
Just south of Coffs Harbour is the ideallic little town of Belingen. As you drive along Waterfall Way, up the giant hills of the hinterland, you’ll be amazed by waterfalls that literally cut in behind the winding roads. This is where you’ll really appreciate having the freedom that comes with campervan rental.

Seal Rocks:
As you drive through the Great Lakes near Newcastle you’ll come to a turn off for Seal Rocks. This is Byron Bay as it was 40 years ago – undeveloped, unexplored and a wave mecca for surfers. Camping is cheap at the local caravan park (which is just across the road from the beach!) and even cheaper in the nearby National Park, so definitely check this place out.

The Blue Mountains:
Nestled in the middle of the Blue Mountains is a great little town – Katoomba. With views in every possible direction, it’s no wonder this town has a rich artistic culture and bohemian atmosphere. Hire a campervan or motorhome from Sydney for a great weekend adventure!
